TIAFT in Cape Town cancelled.
Dear TIAFT friends,
As you are aware by now, our long awaited and much anticipated TIAFT Conference in Cape Town has been cancelled. The very first of its kind to be held on African soil – it was to be our time to shine! We planned and prepared for a conference that would be remembered for a long time, so to have this dream dashed by an invisible virus seems inconceivable, but it is unfortunately true.
After many months of stress while weighing up the Covid-19 situation around the world and with time marching on, we needed to make a decision. As your safety and well-being is our prime concern, we had to consider consistently high covid cases internationally, a predicted fourth wave in South Africa in December, our low vaccination rate, emerging new variants and the travel/quarantine restrictions that would impact so many delegates. We could not, in good faith, encourage you to register and book flights/accommodation knowing that this conference may very well not happen.
Together with the TIAFT Board, we concluded that the meeting in Cape Town was not viable and our only option was to cancel. This was a very difficult decision, and we are utterly disappointed – as you no doubt are too.
A flyer seen recently reads: ‘We are not all in the same boat, we are in the same storm. Some have yachts, some have canoes and some are drowning’. These words ring true – the past 20 months have been very difficult for everyone. We thankfully, can (and will) plan another conference – YOU WILL COME TO CAPE TOWN!
Our sincere thanks to the TIAFT Board and Membership for their support thus far. So, from the TIAFT Cape Town Team: Professors Lorna Martin, Peter Smith, Lubbe Wiesner, Dr Jenna Johnston, Bronwen Davies, Debbie Rorich (Event Management Solutions) and myself, we wish you the best.
